I have to at least try to defend the point she was (so badly) trying to make. Alaska was on the front lines of the Cold War. It's a valid point, especially with a newly-resurgent and newly-belligerent Russia.

At first I thought I wouldn't be able to watch Friday's debate at all. But as it turned out, I felt as if I watched it with the whole world.

Let me take a moment to praise the absolutely wonderful job Jim Lehrer did moderating this debate.

John McCain has appeared out of touch all week, but tonight, he appeared outright extraterrestrial.

It would seem only in the field of foreign policy can people be so utterly wrong all the time yet still retain their jobs and endowed chairs and still be courted by presidential candidates.

Basically, Palin needs to be superhuman: to not only to turn her negative ratings around, but also to somehow make the case for John McCain in a way that he has not yet been able to do for himself.

Obama played the right cards by not coming off as an angry black man and out-presidentialed the guy who claimed that he was better suited to deal with a dangerous world than Obama was.

This is one of those weird situations where I'd feel better about a McCain presidency if I believed the senator was simply lying, but I think his brain filter is just that good.

It is McCain whose world view is characterized by naivete. He still sees the world largely in black and white with no real ability or willingness to see shades of gray.

There are now roughly 6.6 million Americans living abroad; the number of national delegates now at 22. Expats have voted for Obama by a two to one margin.

On his campaign time-out, McCain flew into Washington like Superman and saved the day; not only was he proclaimed debate winner by his campaign hours before the debate had started, but he's also been declared our country's savior by House Republicans for single-handedly steering us to a great bailout plan. McCain is truly a god.

McCain would want us all to be going into the final month of the campaign having serious doubts about Obama. Instead it is McCain's actions that are causing doubts to rise about McCain's own candidacy.

Not since Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy has there been a starker contrast between the two candidates on stage. Yet, even with his five o'clock shadow, Nixon looked better than McCain.

I worried that the American public had been so seduced over the past eight years by self-serving stories -- rather than practical realities -- that the storyteller would always win the day.

Obama provides a realistic vision for the future, while McCain offers tired platitudes and tax cuts for oil executives. The only avenue available to McCain was to lie, because the truth will elect Obama.

My feeling is that the Couric interview might have done for McCain what the first Nixon-Kennedy debate did for Nixon in 1960 -- a true watershed moment.
