I refuse to get too wrapped up in the question of who "won" the debate. In general, unless one candidate obviously self-destructs, this question is answered subjectively and personally. That's not to say I didn't think Biden did better. I did.

People were passionate about W because they could sit down and drink a beer with him. He was just like them. He could not field dress a moose, God bless his soul, but darnnit, he could choke on a pretzel with the best of them. And where did that get us?

Governor Palin repeatedly attempted to re-frame the terms of this debate, and to redefine the Vice Presidency. I watched and thought McCain would offer her four years of maternity leave.

I don't want someone who believes their biggest asset is that they know what it's like to shop at WalMart and take their kids to hockey practice in a mini-van. How will that help in negotiations and diplomatic missions with other heads of state?

Let's not forget Palin's experience as a sports announcer, which explains her rat-a-tat-tat delivery. I mean, this woman didn't skip a beat. Impressive performance. But that's mostly what it was. A performance.

The debate got away from Gwen Ifill, and Sarah Palin got away with passing off folksy platitudes as substitutes for substance.

There wasn't much substance coming out of Sarah Palin as she tried her best to avoid answering the questions last night. What did slip out, though, you should truly find frightening.

A well-regarded fact-wonk, it must have killed Biden inside not to chide his opponent for confusing a Civil War general with one in the Afghan crisis. But outside, cool as a cucumber.

Will the press note that, in addition to spending the entirety of the debate regurgitating the seven or eight note cards worth of information in front of her, Sarah Palin actually plagiarized her final remarks?
