Sarah van Gelder is co-founder of YES! Magazine and has been its executive editor since it began publication in 1996. Her focus at YES! is on the solutions and innovations that address the most profound issues of our time.

Each issue of YES! reframes a crisis of today's world -- a broken health care system; the travesty in Iraq; excessive corporate power; global warming -- showing how a radically different approach can bring about a more just and sustainable world.

And each issue highlights the leadership coming from grassroots communities, social movements, and activists who are building a future that can work for all.

Sarah has interviewed Pete Seeger, Winona LaDuke, George Shultz, Harry Belafonte, Vandana Shiva, Chris Hedges, Danny Glover, and many other known and unknown leaders who are working to create a better world.

In addition to her regular features in the printed magazine, Sarah blogs at www.yesmagazine.org/svgblog, lectures nationally and internationally, and interviews regularly on radio talk shows nationwide.

Don't be fooled by all the accusations about ACORN. The real voting scandal is the voter suppression methods that likely swayed election results in 2000 and 2004, and are in process again.

Most of the news has focused on John McCain's accusations that ACORN is perpetrating a...

They Stood Up to the Banks

6 Comments | Posted October 1, 2008 | 12:44 PM (EST)

The American people stood up, and the bailout package went down.

Like other moments in U.S. history when the robber barons or the big banks went too far, the American people reined them in this week, refusing to hand over billions of dollars that would put themselves and their children...

What Americans Want: An Agenda a Majority Agrees On

Posted August 26, 2008 | 12:11 PM (EST)

You've probably been there. It's a family gathering, maybe Thanksgiving or a wedding, and someone starts a political conversation that is as ill-informed and jargon-filled as Fox News. You hear assumptions about the world that are so alien, you wonder if you're living on the same planet. There seems to...

Two weeks ago, I was alarmed to learn that congressional Democrats were sponsoring Resolution 362, which encourages what amounts to an act of war against Iran.

Today, there are more than 200 co-sponsors of the House resolution, but there is also growing mobilization to stop passage of Res....

What Americans Want: National Health Insurance

It doesn't have to be this way. A video of a woman dying in a Brooklyn hospital waiting room after nearly 24 hours waiting for treatment is just one more heartbreaking piece of evidence that our health care system is not only broken, it has become a hazard.

Are Congressional Democrats Leading Us to War with Iran?

Posted June 26, 2008 | 07:45 PM (EST)

Until recently, the power struggle within the Bush administration over whether to attack Iran seemed to be going badly for the hawks. Their disastrous record in Iraq coupled with flimsy arguments for attacking Iran meant they were gaining little support. But now it appears congressional Democrats may be riding to...

Offshore drilling--No! Climate-friendly energy--Yes!

Posted June 26, 2008 | 01:16 AM (EST)

Proposals by presidential hopeful John McCain and Florida Governor Charlie Crist to drill for oil offshore is the wrong direction for the United States, and most Americans know it.
